THE MIND ORCHESTRA · FREE PRACTICE

The First Sound

Five minutes to listen differently.

Before there is music, there is listening. Explore the sound nearest to you, the world further away and the voice you carry within your own breath.

This short practice is yours to use now. No special instrument, account or equipment is required.

Your first practical tool

The five-minute listening map

Move your attention deliberately, from the body to the soundscape and finally to the voice. Read each stage, then try it without needing to keep checking the screen.

Minute 1 · Arrive

Sit where you are and notice the contact of your body with the chair or ground. Let your breathing be natural. There is nothing you need to change.

Minute 2 · Listen near

Listen for a sound close to you: clothing moving, your own breath or something in the room. Stay with its texture, rhythm, beginning and ending.

Minute 3 · Listen far

Without moving or searching, notice the furthest sound you can hear. Let your attention travel towards it. Its source doesn't need a name.

Minute 4 · Open the whole space

Allow nearby and distant sounds to belong to one larger space. Hear them together, noticing the quiet intervals and changes between them.

Minute 5 · Add your own sound

Breathe in gently. As you breathe out, hum one comfortable note. Let the sound end naturally. Listen to the quiet that follows, then go on with your day.

What did you notice?

Which sound held your attention? Did the space around you seem to change as you listened? Return to this practice in a different place or at a different time and compare the experience.

You already have the instrument. The practice is learning to play it.
